Published: Nov 2012
Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.154691
Abstract: Effective communication is a crucial aspect of the ODIN project. The Communication Plan describes ODIN’s approach to engaging with and disseminating project outputs to key target audiences via various channels for the two-year duration of the project. Under this Plan, two items have already been completed: holding the first of three major community events (the “kick off” meeting) and launching a project website. This document outlines our communication strategy and provides a summary overview of our activities to date.

Authors: Martin Fenner (ORCID EU) and Gudmundur A. Thorisson (ORCID EU)
Published: January 2013
Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.107019
Abstract: The ODIN kickoff meeting provided an overview of the current persistent identifier discussion, as well as valuable input from key stakeholders to the ODIN project. Eleven presenters from a variety of stakeholder groups provided important perspectives, and the extensive discussion by all meeting participants further elaborated on key points. Based on the key scientific inputs, the following actions were identified:
i) Encourage discussion and collaboration between communities
ii) Address specific issues of working with large number of small heterogeneous datasets
iii) Identify main interoperability use cases and define their business value
iv) Encourage development of novel tools to track the reuse of data
D3.1 Proof of concept HSS
Authors: John Kaye (BL), Tom Demeranville (BL), Steven McEachern (ADA)
Published: July 2013
Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.824317
Abstract: During the first year of the ODIN project the needs of Humanities and Social Science researchers were investigated through examining the use and re-use of British Birth Cohort Studies. This report contains the discipline context and characteristics associated with this research area, it outlines the current state of unique and persistent identifier adoption and use and outlines preliminary workflows to build on the opportunities that exist in this area. Year two of ODIN will compare disciplines build on these preliminary workflows to create concrete processes.

Authors: Sünje Dallmeier-Tiessen, Salvatore Mele, Laura Rueda (CERN) Sergio Ruiz (DataCite) Simeon Warner (arXiv)
Published: July 2013
Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.824315
Abstract: During its first year, the ODIN project has studied the needs and particularities of the High-Energy Physics community. Based on these needs, a set of preliminary models on data exchange and workflows has been developed. This information will be used during the second year of the project, when cross-field requirements and parallelisms will be analysed.
D4.1 Conceptual model of interoperability
Authors: Martin Fenner (ORCID EU), Gudmundur A. Thorisson (ORCID EU), Sergio Ruiz (DataCite) and Jan Brase (DataCite)
Published: July 2013
Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.824314
Abstract: A conceptual model to solve the interoperability between different identifiers for data and people is proposed. The model describes key criteria for persistent identifiers and metadata describing the relationship between different identifier schemes. We describe how this conceptual model fits into the Linked Open Data model and look at several key relevant workflows.
D5.1 Gap analysis and draft roadmap
Authors: Sünje Dallmeier-Tiessen (CERN), Patricia Herterich (CERN), Laura Ruede (CERN)
Published: October 2013
Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.825546
Abstract: During the first year of ODIN several steps have been taken to study the strengths and weaknesses in PIDs across disciplines and stakeholder groups. Particular emphasis has been given to the opportunities ahead – the potential that can be unlocked by an open and interoperable PID framework in Europe and beyond.
To do so, a continuous exchange with experts and users of PIDs has been in the focus during this first year. This has happened during selected events, as well as dedicated interviews and literature review. As the core result a SWOT analysis is presented, as well as a concise gap analysis. The report concludes with recommended actions to address the main gaps.
The analysis highlights that the gaps must be addressed urgently and mainly in a collaborative manner. An open, global and interoperable PID layer could unlock the full potential of Open Science if all stakeholder groups and disciplines are involved.

Published: April 2015
Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.1373665
Abstract: The proofs of concept in HSS and HEP have shown how the shared foundations in their ultimate aims, data sharing and author recognition, lead to a convergent evolution. The results obtained served to consolidate a generic workflow for the integration of persistent identifiers and its consequent application in different case studies. This document describes the shared workflows, their application and the remaining challenges for both disciplines.
